Let’s talk about tips for writing a resume from an employer’s perspective.
As I outsource freelance jobs from time to time, I read lots of resumes from translators and other freelancers. I have to say – a well written resume does make a difference.
Resumes are the first thing employers see before they ever set eyes on you. It helps the employers decide whether they will give you that important interview you are looking for.
The translation industry is a relatively small but very competitive industry.
Whether you apply for a permanent position or a freelance opportunity, it is extremely important for you to make that unforgettable first impression a positive one. Here are some tips for writing a resume that gets the interview:
1- Every successful resume should include two parts:
- What have you done in the past?
- What can you do for this particular employer?
This can be a simple listing of your education and past work experience along with professional and personal references.
It is the second part that sets you apart from the herd. Your resume should be your one-of-a-kind marketing tool.
So try to make an attention-grabbing assertion to convince the prospective employer that you have what it takes to be a successful part of their team.
2- Costomize your resume to each different job
It is OK to follow a guideline or a template, but you can’t send a generic resume that looks like everyone else’s. One of the most important tips for writing a resume is to costomize your resume to each job you apply.
Thoroughly research the company and/or position before you apply for a job. Study the job posting. Sell your skills as the perfect fit for their needs.
3- Be absolutely clear about your career direction, or at least appear to be clear
Start by stating your intended position. Place your objective as the first major statement of your resume. If you know the top one or two qualities the employer needs, add those key words to your objective.
4- Get to the point and try to be specific
For example, instead of saying:
Objective – a translator position in a large company.
Try to say:
Objective – a professional translator position that provides accurate, reliable, timely service that exceeds expectations
Do not assume everyone who reads your resume knows what your professional standards are. Most people actually don’t.
You have to tell people.
5- Always include your contact information
6- Use short, snappy and positive action words in your resume
Your prospective employer will probably start the search by quickly glancing at most resumes in the pile. You want to catch their attention within the first couple of lines.
Do not make sentences too long. And keep it to ONE page, maxium two!
List your skills and qualifications with real examples. Gear every word in the Summary section to your targeted goal.
Remember you want your resume to convince the prospective employer that you have whatever it takes to be successful in this position and help him/her enhance his/her bottom line.
All tips for writing a resume is to stimulate interest, and to persuade the prospective employer to call you. That’s the only goal of a resume.
