Ever wish you could get one of those top paying jobs?
Well, if you’ve been a freelancer for a while, you know that traditional translation jobs are considered anything but one of those best paying jobs.
The internet has brought all of us closer than ever before. Unfortunately this also means that the global freelance market is at a client’s finger-tips. And I’m not even talking about the fast developing machine translation industry.
The competitive nature of this business has put a huge pressure on freelance translators and agencies to lower your rates.
Is this a problem for you? Maybe not so much if you live in China or India where being a translator is still considered somewhat prestigious and the pay is still considered decent.
Interestingly I’ve heard from a fellow translator based in China lately. He seems to be offended by my message urging translators to monetize their language skills and talent in more ways. He sees nothing wrong with the current market. “If it ain’t broken, why fix it?” He says.
Well I say, “you don’t need to wait for things to get broken before taking actions.” If you don’t grow your business, you can almost be assured that your business will disappear sooner than you think. It’s as simple as that.
Most people will not get top paying jobs. But that doesn’t mean you should quit trying altogether. On the other hand, if you simply enjoy what you do and don’t mind getting paid peanuts for your professional work, or experiencing feast or famine, then feel free to ride with it.
There’s nothing wrong with sticking to your passion. But most of us are trying to make a decent living. The good news is – you have a choice. In fact just making a few tweaks in your freelance business can boost your income dramatically.
Noticed in the news lately? There are 2 fastest growing industries with top paying jobs predicted for the next 10-20 years. There are niche consulting and the self improvement.
There’s so much potential for translators such as yourself. How? Let me explain.
1- Niche consulting
In case you haven’t noticed, while many large corporations are downsizing, more and more former corporate employees are striking out on their own.
They use their expertise and knowledge to help clients save money, be more productive and grow their business. On the other hand more clients are favoring small contractors for flexibility and lower cost. No doubt, the competition is intense for consultants, but the entry requirement is low.
So where’re the top paying jobs for you? Seek out consultants to form strategic alliance. Many of my bigger projects come from business consultants these days.
Most of them are working with large multinational corporations. Having a translator on their side who understands both languages gives them a sharp edge over their competitors.
The best part? They almost never bargain. It’s way more profitable for them to have a happy long term business partner than to cut a few bucks here and there.
2- Self improvement
The self improvement industry includes motivational speaking seminars, wealth building and spiritual guidance related services and products. Some also call it the expert industry. This is a billion dollar industry and according to many business experts it will keep growing for the next 10 to 20 years.
This is a gold mine for translators with lots of top paying jobs. Why? There are tons of self improvement related information products waiting to be translated into different languages. It’s a lucrative business.
But here’s the trick – not every translator will be able to do it.
The self improvement industry relies heavily on highly focused marketing messages. That means translators who understand online marketing and marketing in general win the game.
The key is to make the message intact from the source language to the target language so that it still triggers the most wanted response from the audience
